About Us

Sometimes the smallest people do the most wondrous of things.

The Unicare Difference

Seven points we are proud of at Unicare:

  1. We have been rated by the WA Government as Exceeding the National Quality Standards for education and care.

  2. We are Not for Profit and run by a passionate parent board who are committed to providing a high-quality early learning environment.

  3. We speak 15 languages and welcome parents and families from all over the world. We have been learning Auslan together for many years.

  4. Our centre, with its extended gardens, is on the stunning University of Western Australia’s Crawley (Nedlands) campus.

  5. From our long history, we know how to support parents who are working, and parents who are studying, or both!

  6. Programs such as our early childhood environmental science program, languages programs, movement and health programs, and our much-loved food and cooking program, are all included – at Unicare every child is included - and there are no extra or hidden fees.

  7. Our curriculum and care programs offer you the chance to be involved, to gain a deep understanding of what we offer for your child, and to ensure that we offer the program that you want. We often tell new parents that it is our role to fit into your child’s day. They don’t have to change to fit into our day!

Our Philosophy

We are a community who place children at the centre of our focus. As a community, we are here to nurture lives of respect and kindness. Our children are co-creators of our programs. We want them to see their learning places and spaces here as places of wonder.

We work to engage every child, hearing and supporting their voice, listening for it, and helping it to be heard each day.

Our work on children’s wellbeing has never been more important. Our way of being ensures that the children are thriving - with a sense of wellbeing, emotional security, and safety.

We are professionals who work closely and authentically with each other, with parents, and families, respectfully engaging in our work, understanding the power of equality and of partnership.

We offer a place where adults can be present for the children and in doing so, we will work to see that the children and adults grow side by side.

We create and sustain an ecology of respect for the child’s experience of learning through play in which we strive to give children the space and time to discover the world on their own terms - in environments that are inclusive for all.

Our work, our practice and our relationships have never been more important. Every day we advocate for children and their families and offer them a place to thrive.

“… We strive to give children the space and time to discover the world on their own terms”

Our History

In 1971 the need for early childhood education was increasing and a group of students formed the University Child Care Club (Unicare). In April 1972 they began with a small house on Parkway that became the home away from home to 20 children who were enrolled.

During the following years the community need continued to rise and by 1975 the service had more than tripled in size to 3 houses providing 70 places.

By 1985 with a continuing need the Unicare Management Committee with the support of UWA and the Australian Government oversaw the construction of the building you see here today.

Opened in 1988 Unicare had now grown to an impressive 122 place service supporting the University of Western Australia’s Crawley campus in Nedlands and the local community.
